Various issues African international students deal with while attending American universities;
Culture Shock

Coming from Africa, international students know that they are going to a place they have never been to and is very much different from what they are used to, they are not supposed to expect to have everyone understand their likes with respect to how they do things where they are from. What is deemed very important to them may not be so important in America. Understanding this can be quite tough in most cases and getting adjusted to it would also take a while. Getting involved in extracurricular activities, recreation on or off campus usually helps, gives room for African international students to meet with Americans and other individuals who have traveled across the world to get a university education.
Time Management

Most African international students are not so used to time management but are forced to understand it the moment they get to America. Many have no option but to realize that they have to be in certain places at the right time, be it for a lecture or personal study time or even work.
Climate Change

It is way different here in America than it is in Africa in terms of weather. For example, in Nigeria, there is no such thing as winter, we only have a wet and dry season and it is rainy in the wet season and very hot in the dry season. So getting here, these students have to deal with the extreme cold weather in its season and how they are forced to get used to the weather especially with the cooling and heating systems in the public places they share with other Americans, examples include the library and hostel.
Social Interaction and Stereotyping

Making new friends as soon as they arrive has gone on to be magical for most people. Getting involved in as much as an African international student can be of paramount importance. This will help interact with Americans and also get them to understand that Africans are really not from the jungle swinging from trees and that Africans actually come developing cities with a good academic basic academic system. In most cases, this will help these African students introduce their culture to Americans.

Language Barrier

About a dozen African countries have the English language as its official language and so because of this many African international students from non-English speaking countries have to take English as a second language for communication purposes.
Learning Style

The style of instruction many African international students are used to does not require them to interact in the class and because of the way it is in America where most professors require the classroom work to be based on conversation and interaction, most African international student have to get used to expressing themselves more in class irrespective of how they sound in terms of pronunciations.
Finances

When this becomes difficult, grades have been believed to do wonders, because getting good ones will aid in the qualification of merit-based scholarships that are made available.This has been one of the major ways international students have been able to finance their college education up until they graduate, many are blessed with all of their tuition paid for with money for books provided, room and board with feeding inclusive. These are very much the basic needs of a student, particularly for an African international student with no family around to help. Sometimes rendering help and being of positive attitude gets many of these students to be favored immensely, things like volunteer work, community outreach usually gets people to see how true people are in terms of character. It is sometimes an avenue for the African international students to get Americans to have a rethink about them or what they might have seen in the media which is mostly not true.
